Inspired by the personality and legacy of its owners, interior designer Adele Bates has injected a curious sense of the contemporary into the bones of a newly renovated heritage home, Arno Residence.
Together with architects Bayley Ward, Adele Bates has teamed up with stylist Bree Leech to capture the individuality of their clients, while carving a future-focussed canvas for the years to come. The result is an effortless transition between heritage and contemporary. Arno Residence is affectionately named after the late owner’s husband, who passed away during the build process and pays homage to the client’s original vision and their shared passion for this home.

Located in Melbourne’s Toorak, Arno Residence is anchored by vertical support structures between inside and outside, varying in thickness to create a sense of hierarchy. Internally, rich and dark timber flooring throughout is cooled with a palette of whites and greys.
The introduction of natural light to Arno Residence was key. Most notably, the rear skylight acts as a sliver of what is to come in the expansive rear backyard. Acting as both an architectural element and a way to integrate the interior experience, it adds a sculptural element to the space.

Custom joinery hides a collection of integrated storage throughout Arno Residence, while the lightweight framing of glass doors and custom display shelving elements add pockets for expression.
Through the layering of texture, monochromatic patterns, interesting tactile hardware and colour, there is a mixed sense of the owner’s South African heritage. Arno Residence cleverly fuses old and new and through a muted and grounding palette, furniture and decorative items have become the hero expression. The team at Adele Bates have brought together an eclectic sense of colour and vitality, creating a home that epitomises an enviable urban retreat.
