There’s nothing more intriguing than getting to step inside where a creative lives and rests. This privilege was met with the work of Studio David Thulstrup, who have reinvented a Danish factory to create an oasis for photographer Peter Krasilnikoff. Making things even more special, Krasilnikoff shot the home himself, clearly appreciating every nuance of his transformed home and workspace.

It should be no coincidence that an artist chose to reside in what was one a pencil factory. The industrial building by Copenhagen’s harbour caught Peter Krasilnikoff’s eye, who then set out to make it both his studio and private home. Retaining all but three brick walls from the original garage, the brief was inspired by worn-out warehouses and raw factory roots. With this in mind Krasilnikoff collaborated closely with Studio David Thulstrup to beautifully capture light and flow — design elements a photographer and architect knows well.
At the heart of the home is a spectacular glass-walled atrium, filled with lush grass and Scandinavian shrubbery. There may be something to say about a creative wishing for a constant plant life reminder, because just as the home of Hans Verstuyft , all three levels of the home have access to the green. The rooftop terrace offers an alternate view of the greenery, while boasting another dimension to the urban garden. The black-framed glass opening is in no way jarring, accentuated by the clever cladding of Dinesen HeartOak boards. Studio David Thulstrup selected Dinesen HeartOak boards to dress the walls and floors, softening the perforated blackened steel staircase. The HeartOak boards are unique, processed gently and preserving the naturally occurring cracks locked by butterfly joints of oak. Layering the mix of tactile materials, the oak is a smooth addition in the company of a custom-made terrazzo bench top and polished concrete.
The accomplished photographer has spent his fair share of time traversing exhibitions and openings, so it is no surprise the home opens up like a gallery. The scale and form of each floor, combined with the rich plum and oatmeal curtains make for dramatic spaces that feel as if they are lifted from the halls of a museum or theatre. Out of this spatial magic Studio David Thulstrup made considered effort to install artistic light fittings and bespoke fixtures. From here, your attention is drawn from the photographic prints to the furniture; culminating in a visionary abode that is a complete artwork in itself.
