Often when we hear the word apartment we think of a restricted dwelling however, that certainly isn’t the case for the Bondi Beach Apartment cleverly designed by Architectural Design Studio Mathieson Architects.

Known for approaching their projects with a set of modernist design principles, the design behind Bondi Beach Apartment by Mathieson Architects is no different. The homeowners brief called for a ‘mixture of visual and social experiences to consume the home’ and the team at Mathieson Architects gave them just that – and more. A strong sense of scale, form and materiality is felt from the moment you step through the front door and take in the ocean views beyond.

It’s not hard to tell that a rigorous design plan was made prior to construction. The layout of the apartment really utilises every inch of space this humble abode has to offer. The centre of the home comprises of substantial living space and a study, laundry and scullery have all be concealed behind timber cladding, which further aligns the modern and refined approach throughout.

The open plan kitchen was designed to resemble an element of furniture, something that we love seeing here at est. A cluster of three bedrooms, each with their own ensuite and dressing room, have been incorporated- each of which features full height windows that work to magnify the ocean views that surround them.

A reduced palette with accents of masculine undertones was favoured throughout the home described by Mathieson Architects as “A palpable sense of stillness is created by the soft envelope of white walls, terrazzo floor, and generosity of light”. The juxtaposition of dark features includes the black granite island bench and Tasmanian blackwood furniture which is softened against the use of soft linen sheer curtains and bespoke woven abaca furniture pieces, which together offer a sense of luxury and sophistication. With a minimal inclusion of colour, the refined materiality choices allow the mesmerising backdrop of the ocean to speak the loudest in this beachside home.

The Bondi Beach Apartment proves that apartment living doesn’t mean compromising on space, natural light or design. Refined, natural and textural the ocean-outlook of this home takes centre-stage.
