Regular readers of est would know that we’ve got a not-so-secret affinity for modern coastal homes, especially those along the Australian coastline. And while we’ve certainly seen our fair share of beach shack renovations, this Bronte home still managed to grab our attention from the get go. Rich in character and history, this humble dwelling had withstood the test of time – but thanks to some TLC from interior architecture practice Lane & Grove it’s moved from surviving to thriving on the Sydney shores.
The home is idyllically perched above one of Australia’s most renowned coastlines. With views of the ever-changing Pacific Ocean, the soothing sound of crashing waves on its doorstep and that familiar Australian ocean breeze coming through the windows, it almost sounds too good to be true. But while its surroundings were second to none, the home itself was lacking the same measure. Having undergone four previous renovations, this humble dwelling was in need of a complete overhaul.
Out with the old and in with the new was this project’s forte. The clients made it clear they didn’t want any fragments of the existing house to stand; instead they wanted a sophisticated aesthetic which was practical for their age, flexible for their lifestyle and would make for an elegant backdrop for entertaining. A holistic approach was taken by Lane & Grove when redesigning the spaces, to ensure all interior area “spoke the same language” and improved the sight lines to make the spaces feel more generous and connected.
The resulting home hits that ideal balance between comfortable and beautiful, with a true sense of the outdoor setting it inhabits while introducing elements that speak firmly to the here and now. The soft and tactile furnishings, natural materials and jaw-dropping ocean views ensure this home is in no need of another facelift – what Lane & Grove have created here is sure to endure for years to come.
