Located in Brooklyn’s tallest skyscraper, this apartment by New York design duo Husband Wife embraces the old and new of its iconic surroundings.

Described as a ‘love letter to New York’, this striking family apartment is located on the 56th floor of the Brooklyn Tower. Husband Wife studio founders Brittney Hart and Justin Capuco channel their own family values to create a space that blends functionality and sophistication; flexibility and liveliness; entertainment and reprieve. The home’s grounding palette is a nod to New York’s architectural history, with subtle surprises woven through each layer.

    In the Clouds

The building itself, defined by abstract fluting and metallic panels, was designed by SHoP Architects and completed in early 2022. Enlisted to take on an apartment 56 floors up, Husband Wife embraced the apartment’s generous space and floor-to-ceiling windows, which frame picture-perfect views of New York City’s Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn and Queens. Despite Brittney’s intense fear of heights, the site’s altitude is one of the design duo’s favourite aspects of the home.

    The People’s Bank

The Brooklyn Tower shares a home with the iconic Dime Savings Bank of Brooklyn or the People’s Bank. The building’s distinct columns and hexagonal shape have been iconic to the New York suburb since the early 1900s. This heritage site was a primary source of inspiration for Husband Wife, who drew cues from the building’s architecture. The poetic juxtaposition of the bank’s heritage and the tower’s contemporary details are felt inside the apartment through both modern and traditional details. “We opted to use warm tones similar to the Dime Savings Bank in our space while reinterpreting the details into forms that paid homage to both the bank and the new SHoP facade,” Justin says.

    A Blended Interior

Each space is home to what the design duo call a “mixed bag of past lives.”  The kitchen draws warmth from walnut veneer and timber flooring while mirrored surfaces appear here and in the living spaces through brass, chrome and glass accents, reflective of the building’s exterior.

The design firm sought out iconic design pieces to fill the space with a sense of character, and transport those inside to another time. Pieces by local artists and photographers act as an appreciation for New York creativity

A family abode brought to life through refined and comfortable design, Husband Wife’s Brooklyn Tower project articulates the essence of New York City through a past and present lens.
