Clovelly 03 House by Lane & Grove

Sydney-based interior design studio Lane & Grove bring functionality and gentle textural contrast to a light-filled Clovelly home.

Lane & Grove were asked to refresh a home designed by revered Sydney architect Luigi Rosselli 20 years ago. The client requested their home be simplified through material selection, making for a clean, light and contemporary backdrop to conceal everyday clutter. Lane & Grove achieved all of this and more, in a home that not only exudes sophistication but pays homage to its coastal location.

Grey sheers from Simple Studio frame the living area.

The existing layout was largely maintained, with the internal rooms adjusted to work more efficiently, capture views and maximise natural light. Lane & Grove director Deborah Quigley says the main goal was to design a home that complemented the client’s refined lifestyle, so materials were adjusted throughout. “We like to think the (material) selection is sympathetic to its environment,” Deborah Quigley says. Matte oak engineered timber flooring from Precision sets a consistent tone throughout the home; the perfect canvas for effortless and comfortable furniture.

Every room in the home is carefully considered, with adequate storage. There are subtle variations between each room through the application of materials, creating interest and ensuring each room is unique.

Combining ample natural light and an abundance of lush foliage, Lane & Grove curated a calming palette that is consistent throughout the home; as seen in their Bronte project. Replacing all existing hinged doors with timber sliders created a customised open-plan living style, essential for a cohesive family home.

The custom fireplace creates a strong focal point in the living room. Sheer grey curtains from Simple Studio gently diffuse and filter the northern light, but don’t interrupt the unmatched view of the pool and sunny courtyard.

The granite benchtop and splashback from WK stone take centre stage in the kitchen.

This Clovelly Home’s kitchen is a design statement in its own right, with its whitewashed oak veneer cabinetry and WK granite benchtops with custom drip tray. There is an abundance of storage both in drawers and within the fluted glass display cupboards. A concealed rangehood and streamlined, integrated appliances marry simplicity and effectiveness within the space. The study carries on with the continuation of whitewashed oak veneer cabinetry, to neatly conceal mess. “The timber surface holds the shadows of the moving sun, exaggerating the curve as the sun moves through the day,” Deborah says.

In the master ensuite, Brodware brass tapware is heavily contrasted with soft Bisanna white mosaic tiles, featured alongside a curved custom vanity. The guest bathroom features a statement stand-alone basin from Candana, sitting atop pink marble tiles. Granite slabs are kept consistent throughout the home, ensuring the perfect balance of sophistication and uniformity.

The Clovelly 03 Home is a timeless and refined testament that stays true to its coastal surrounds. Lane & Grove have ensured that everything in the home offers relevance, grace and quality; a space for the client to share family memories for years to come.

“The clients gave us full design control. Not one material or custom joinery design was questioned; they wanted us to have the license to produce something special for them that wasn’t compromised by their changes.”
