The homeowners were intrinsically drawn to the overgrown site, realising its potential for an adventure-filled place to raise their family. The original home – a single-storey bungalow with an unsympathetic rear addition – failed to connect with the natural surrounds. By removing the addition and revealing the original form, studioplusthree have given the home a new lease of life, with an inherent sense of connectedness to the natural environment. 

studioplusthree set out to design a sanctuary that felt removed from the city, despite its closeness. Realising this vision, a new timber-clad first storey volume sits softly within the landscape. This specially-treated timber from Kebony will develop a weathered patina over time, reflecting the changing nature of the garden around it. 

Downstairs in the kitchen, full-height glass creates a seamless union between the garden and the architecture. The olive green kitchen references the natural setting, contrasted with Spotted Gum joinery and flooring.

A cleverly-inserted pod into the first floor in line with the pitched roofline retains the home’s character and remains considerate of neighbouring homes, while external Venetian blinds contribute to the home’s environmentally-conscious focus.
