Alexander &CO. design a polished new identity for a heritage home on a small block in Sydney’s prestigious Darling Point.

Alexander &CO. have an intrinsic ability to sow the seeds of timelessness into all of their projects. It’s something that regular readers will know we value above all else at est — but equally, not always an easy feat. Since we first discovered Alexander &CO., we have admired their true respect for materiality and craftsmanship; an ethos that rings true in their warm and welcoming Darling Point Project.

While it may be located in one of Sydney’s most coveted neighbourhoods, this Victorian-era brick home and its small block wasn’t the grandest of estates. But it’s now clear even from the outside — retaining only the brick carapace of the two-storey structure — that some serious design intervention was had. Thanks to Alexander &CO. and their bid to bring the best out of the old and a little bit of handmade heart and soul to the interiors, this abode now comfortably fits the Darling Point bill.

Alexander &CO. director Jeremy Bull and his team started by rearranging the 230-square-metre house to a new layout that includes an entry vestibule, four bedrooms, a study and a garden terrace. The entrance was changed to be at the side of the block, marked by the exotic blue-and-white tessellated floor. The two cramped staircases were consolidated into a central light well and they were able to improve the gentle flow from each room.

To achieve the restrained, tactile palette, every surface in the home has been hand-detailed and finished. This ranges from polished plasterwork, limestone slab flooring and timber ceiling wall panelling and lining boards. All details celebrate the patina of time, with traditional oak parquet and white-wrapped walls, elegantly blended with linen furnishings and burnished brass. Off the living space, French doors pivot out to a paved terrace that wraps around the house for alfresco dining. Inside and out, it’s an inviting blend of European living and a down-to-earth aesthetic.

Modernist design classics are pared with contemporary gems throughout. Standouts in the shared spaces include the Houndstooth pattern Arflex ‘Neptunia’ armchair from Poliform, ‘Buds Tavolo 3’ table lamp by Rodolfo Dordoni for Space, Thonet GmbH ‘2002’ bentwood sofa from Anibou and ‘Kim’ nesting coffee table by Nichetto from Spence & Lyda. Other notable pieces include the Blue Knoll Studio ‘Platner’ armchair from De De Ce, Domincile daybed from Studio Cavit, ‘Malawi’ rug by Armadillo&Co and Maxalto ‘Kalos’ armchair from Space.

In the formal dining room, a love of entertaining guests has ensured a 10-seater dining table by Matthew Hilton with ‘Capo’ chairs by Neri & Hu, all from Spence & Lyda. Spence & Lyda are also to thank for the beautiful vessels – as seen in the entry hall – with sculptures by Holly Ryan and Tracey Deep.

Private spaces in Darling Point include three children’s bedrooms upstairs and a private terrace for the parents. In the master bedroom, the ‘Prive’ bed by Santarossa is paired with Ivano Redaelli bed linen and accompanied by the Molenti ‘Vicino’ side table and Mondoluce ‘Lucille’ table lamps under artwork by Lili Waters.

In essence, Alexander &CO. have captured the spirit of the home’s character, instead of trying to replicate or recreate its historic features. By doing so, they’ve designed a home as classic and cutting edge as the objects in each room – for which we’re sure the likes of Charlotte Perriand, Gio Ponti, and Warren Platner would certainly approve.
