We’re bringing the fabric of the Dekton® House to the fore, as a case study for designing sleek, minimalist and hard-working family spaces.

Alec Pappas Architects were entrusted with a family of four’s forever home, overlooking Sydney’s Kyle Bay. The owners wished for a contemporary, clutter-free and low-maintenance place to call home, that allowed them to host a large number of guests.

As the name aptly suggests, the Dekton® House is bound by Dekton® surfaces both inside and out. Selected for the material’s durability, strength and neutral colour palette, Dekton® was a favourable choice for a busy family with two teenagers, adept with entertaining.

We caught up with Dekton® House owner Aly Stergiou, to explore how Dekton® became an integral part of her home, and how it serves her family’s ever-evolving needs.

Dekton® House was designed across two storeys, with high ceilings and large glazed openings to welcome natural light and views of Georges River. Owner Aly had a clear vision on how she wanted the home to appear, resonating with a pared-back aesthetic, complementary to the modern streetscape. “The use of Dekton® in our home meets the design brief of following a minimalist style,” says Aly. “Dekton® was specified by our fabricator FORM-RITE Co., who put this material forward for its durability, great colour range and large format.”

As a benchtop fabricator and installer, FORM-RITE Co. knew Dekton®, available at Cosentino, would be a premium, versatile material choice in the home. Through Aly’s trust in material exploration, Dekton® was not only chosen to hero the kitchen but makes a polished appearance in nearly every space of the home – inside and out.

    The kitchen’s crowning jewel is a 3-metre-long island clad in Dekton® Aura15.

“As we entertain a lot, I found the Dekton surfaces very easy to keep clean and maintain.”

Alec Pappas Architects designed no ordinary kitchen space for the Dekton® House. It needed to be an entertainer’s space, to accommodate weekend dinner parties and up to sixty guests at Christmas. This made way for a defining showpiece in the home; a 3-metre-long island clad in Dekton® Aura15.

My favourite space would have to be my kitchen and the outlook to the pool area when I stand at the island bench,” Aly explains. “When entertaining, our guests always gather around the island bench; it’s the focal point of our kitchen.” Where friends and family congregate, the Dekton® Aura15 island bench is easy to clean, without the fear of stains. Alec Pappas Architects also ensured the cooktop was entirely integrated to maintain the smooth, uninterrupted surface.

While a highly durable material, Dekton® Aura15 ensures the kitchen island expresses timeless elegance through its veining, complementing the concrete-slab floor and timber-veneer joinery. “Visitors to our home are always impressed as Dekton® is a new and unique product that they have not seen before,” Aly says.

The dining table is topped with Dekton® Spectra, that Alec Pappas Architects also incorporated into the custom joinery in the living space.

In creating a formal dining area for all of their visitors, Alec Pappas Architects designed a custom dining table using Dekton® Spectra, with the same appearance as black glass. Alec Pappas Architects also incorporated Dekton® Spectra into the custom joinery in the living space, offering a sophisticated foundation to layer leather and velvet furnishings.

As any parent is familiar with, the highly-trafficked bathroom spaces need to serve their functional purpose. For the Dekton® House, Aly also wanted these spaces to be a place of sanctuary for her family. Fundamentally, this came down to selecting soft and neutral tones and textures, through the wear-resistant Dekton® Blanc Concrete in the main bathroom and Dekton® Keon in the ensuite. These surfaces are in the good company of glossy Dekton® Halo basins and European oak joinery.

The laundry may not be a room in the home that typically elicits calm, but Alec Pappas Architects have foregone this notion. The design team ensured it had the same look and feel as the bathroom, lined with Dekton® Blanc Concrete.

With Dekton® surfaces elevating this family home internally, it was only natural it would find a place externally, in the 500-square-metre outdoor area. For such a large area, Aly needed a material that didn’t require a lot of maintenance, requesting large-format Dekton® Blanc Concrete and Dekton® Strato.

Used as the paving in the front and rear yard and around the pool, Dekton® Blanc Concrete has the appearance of concrete, without any imperfections. To the benefit of those barefoot around the pool, Dekton® Blanc Concrete also doesn’t heat up in hot weather.

A defining thread throughout, Dekton® has equipped this family of four’s home with quality, long-lasting foundations. Culminating in a functional and streamlined abode, Alec Pappas Architects have ensured the Dekton® House exceeds the benchmark for both entertaining and teenagers alike.
