We celebrate the addition of three new Armadillo rugs to their Classic Collection and explore the key roles that nature and sustainability have played in inspiring the design philosophies behind this core range.
We all share an inherent affinity for nature – yet in today’s modern world we often struggle to find this connection, which can not only impact negatively on our health but affect our happiness and productivity at home. Thankfully, Armadillo pride themselves on finding ways to incorporate the great outdoors into our interior spaces, giving us the opportunity to restore this sense of connection and nourish our well-being.
Driven by ethics as well as aesthetics, each Armadillo rug is handmade from natural and sustainable fibres and embraces Fair Trade practices. At est, we support their founding ethos to handcraft rugs that ‘lie lightly on this earth’, so you can imagine our team’s excitement when we were one of the first to hear that Armadillo were releasing three new designer rug styles under their Classic Collection.
Produced in partnership with Armadillo.
For Armadillo, nature is a deeply rooted value that informs a key part of each rug they craft. The Classic Collection directly draws on nature to inspire its rich and earthy colour palette, organic patterns, shapes and texture – which together, invite a reassuring and calming tactility underfoot and a restorative balance to any space.
This design philosophy also weaves its way into the three new additions to the Classic Collection; Sonoma, Palermo and Andorra. Inspired by flora and fauna of the outdoors, Sonoma takes inspiration from California’s lush wine landscape, the richly-dyed wool and jute fibres taking on a greeny-blue hue with a lustre that shifts as the light does.
Palermo marks Armadillo’s first exploration into linen. Developing a luxurious patina over time, Palermo is designed to become softer and silkier with use. Meanwhile, Andorra – which is constructed of wool – has a more hardwearing appeal and mimics a rock face with its textural diversity and tactile weave. Appearing resilient at first touch, Andorra has a nurturing and grounding presence that can transform any home into a calming refuge.
A key part of Armadillo’s collections, these natural references encourage us to take a step back from our often fast-paced lives to find peace in the serenity that comes from incorporating nature. Through these visual cues, we can begin to enrich and enhance our well-being within the sanctuary of our own homes.
Armadillo are a company conscious of using minimally-processed methods to craft their rugs, and the Classic Collection is no exception to embracing this ethos. Natural and sustainably sourced fibres such as jute, wool and linen are not only non-allergenic but help support a healthier home by leaving behind a lighter footprint.
Handcrafted by master artisans in India, using these fibres is what creates an ‘uncommonly beautiful’ lineage of craftsmanship. Like all Armadillo’s rugs, the design process behind the Classic Collection encompasses traditional design methods, meaning a more energy-efficient outcome. Encouraging a deeper, more mindful connection to each rug, the bespoke, handwoven rugs of the Classic Collection capture a tranquil timelessness and deliver a unique story to be told.
Considered in their design and authentic in their heritage, Armadillo’s Classic Collection offers a foundation for the home that is both naturally inspired and sustainably achieved for a healthier, more mindful connection.
