There is no other way to describe it – this six bedroom home in Gordon’s Bay, Coogee is lush. Designed by Madeleine Blanchfield Architects, the combination of the stunning clifftop views, abundant greenery and plenty of relaxing spaces has us ready for our own beachside retreat.

The design makes full use of the sea views (naturally) across the three levels, with an elevated central living, kitchen and dining level above a more casual lower level with bifold doors opening to the garden. These areas each have a distinct personality of their own, with the colour palette and furniture carefully picked to reflect the use of the space. The main living level espouses dark timber, concrete and soft muted tones, while the lower level features limed timber ceilings and a brighter, whiter colour palette combined with casual furnishings.

While this is a beautiful home, it’s also a family home and we love the sense of fun and colour throughout the living areas. Lights are warm, textures are light and the large exterior spaces, including a 15 metre lap pool, are great for encouraging outdoor activity.

The attention to creating harmony between the indoor and outdoor spaces is clear throughout the exterior, from the colour palette that continues on from the interior design to the north-facing courtyard that cuts into the steep eastern side of the garden bringing light to the less sun-indulged side of the home.  The fact that you can stand at the Gordon Avenue entrance and take in the bay views through the house is testament to a well-considered coastal home, revelling in its local environment.

Marble, stained timber and concrete are the major textural players here, uniting the different spaces and highlighting a focus on durable materials throughout the upper, more refined level and the lower casual level.
