SJB and Wolveridge Architects design a contemporary family home that fosters flow, connection and conversation.

Quiet materiality and bespoke detailing create an intimate family home in Melbourne’s bayside suburb of Brighton. With architecture by Wolveridge Architects and interiors by SJB, the home balances a sense of humility as the backdrop to daily life while also bringing moments of joy through art, material and texture throughout.

The living space features a grey and green Tufty-Time sofa designed by Patricia Urquiola for B&B Italia, while the outdoor courtyard features the Tribu Nodi easy chair.

The architecture’s concrete, timber panelling and stone directly engages with the Brighton surroundings. Building on this, the home’s open-plan layout invites greenery and natural light into all areas, enhanced by the steel framing internally and externally.

A connection to nature is further accented by the colour green – be it the sage green joinery that runs the length of the ‘show’ kitchen or the Envious Green stone kitchen island sourced from G-Lux. Together with the high-quality natural material palette featuring natural stone, timber flooring and veneer, SJB have established an understated elegance founded on a less-is-better approach. The neutral backdrop also allows for custom elements – such as the kitchen island – or furniture pieces, such as the Tufty-Time sofa by Patricia Urquiola for B&B Italia to bring a sense of playfulness to the interiors.

Moving through the home, a transition to the private areas is marked by cocooning grey tones. The bathrooms have been designed from the ground up, where the marble flooring takes centre stage and creates a sense of drama, framed by textured grey walls. The main bedroom features a Silver Aurora wall covering, and the monochrome palette extends to the second bedroom, layered with dusty pink linen.

The Brighton Residence demonstrates the ability to design interiors beyond individual components. Instead, the interiors reflect an inherent cohesion that supports the value of craftsmanship and, in doing so, transcends trends.
