The Hebrides, a Scottish archipelago made up of hundreds of islands, has its own deep, elemental voice and this home by Bath and London-based design studio Room falls into dialogue with it.

Surrounded by towering forests with commanding views across Portree Loch on the Isle of Sky, Hebridean Home takes on the wild, rugged ambience. Natural stone and black stained larch define a facade relieved by expanses of frameless glazing, which mirror and celebrate the dramatic views and inform a design aesthetic in sync with the landscape. Responsible for the project’s architecture and interior design, Room has responded to the client’s brief by shaping a home inspired by the composition of surrounding trees and elevated by bespoke furniture, noble materials and statement fittings.

Seeking to anchor the stone and timber-framed house into its wild context, Room has allowed its form to follow the contours of the land with its blackened timber cladding and natural stone walling working to reduce the visual impact of the dwelling in distant views from Portree Harbour.

The use of natural materials continues within, infusing every surface with tactility and warmth. Hand-trowelled lime plaster is paired with split-faced limestone, poured resin flooring, striking marble and bespoke carpentry, all complemented by a carefully considered lighting scheme and statement fittings.

Taj Mahal marble bench tops and a hand-split white limestone splashback weave wabi sabi intonations through the kitchen, echoing the breathtaking imperfection of nature on display all around the home. Joinery and appliances are cleanly integrated, while Henry Blake Bronze hardware and a Lambert & Fils Dot Line suspension light embellish the space.

The home’s side wing features an open-plan bedroom-bathroom suite with spectacular views. Up a half level, accessed by a seamless continuation of resin floors and resin stairs, is the main house with an expansive living and dining area set in front of a striking kitchen so that the view is enjoyed from every corner. Bespoke cabinetry in Ash veneer is framed by twin timber-clad volumes that house the utility room and pantry. A slot roof light casts a veil of daylight down the full-height-faced limestone feature wall.

Beyond the living space lies the main suite. Here, an elegant stone bath rests in the corner and is set beneath a large frameless window with undisturbed, tranquil views and absolute privacy. There is a further ensuite with a double walk-in shower, double vanity and a bespoke mirror commissioned by Room. The space’s diffused glow continues the use of natural materials in the home’s social areas – porcelain tiles in Urbe Natural, micro-cement walls, heavy metal tapware, and meticulously resolved joinery.

The main suite features a custom bed by Room and Picasso bath by Lusso Stone.

Taking in sweeping views of Portree Loch, the entire home is poised to let its setting inform its design language. In the guest bedroom, a frameless corner window is the perfect vantage point beneath a Marset Ginger pendant light, Airisto coffee table and lounge chairs.

Further perforations cut into the roof, bringing daylight into the rear spaces bedded into the hillside slope. Large-format glazing maximises views over a plunge pool and out across the estuary. Though every space has its own clear identity, there is an understated calmness running throughout to emphasise the free-flowing open-plan layout of this unique Hebridean home.

In striking the perfect chord between juxtaposing and complimenting the atmosphere of the Hebrides, Room has created a sanctuary.
