Mim Design’s latest residential project in Flinders, Victoria, is a love letter to its raw and dynamic coastal surrounds.
When presented with a home of exceptional scale, it’s easy to overlook the finer details; the colours paired, the material application, and the delicate craftsmanship. But inside this monumental build on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, Melbourne-based interior design studio Mim Design have made the finer details their mission. With expansive views stretching from the shore to the horizon on the rugged clifftop, a meticulous lens reveals the landscape was Mim Design’s muse, fashioning a home permanently indebted to nature.

The kitchen features Brodware tapware and CDK St Croix stone; the dining space features Arflex Botolo high chairs and a custom grazia&co Stamp dining table; the seating area features the La Chance Salute side table and Living Divani Extrasoft sofa.
With such a formal architectural expression, Mim Design wanted the interiors of Horizon Flinders to emerge as a ‘standstill’ of sorts; a calm counterpart to the large, sculptural gestures that one sees when they first arrive. “Given the generous scale of the home, we were determined to make the spaces feel comfortable and practical,” director Mim Fanning says. As a result, the spaces have a distinct boldness and solidity, yet a sense of softness and restraint similar to the exterior.
Parallels between the interiors and the landscape are everywhere. The white stone used in the kitchen resembles foam washing up against the shore – the curve of the island bench mimicking a gentle wave form – while the bar and cellar resemble the water, calling on sumptuous hues of green stone. This pairing of white and green stone is a running theme, as is the use of curves, bringing the ocean with you wherever you go.
A connection to the outdoors ensues from a direct dialogue with the surroundings through wide-range elevated views across the bay. “The first-floor living spaces are the true hero of the project, with their panoramic views of the ocean,” Mim says. Designed to awe and inspire, this area of the home is suited to inviting guests over to sit, drink and delight in the marvels of the Mornington Peninsula.
Mim Design’s ability to balance opulence and restraint culminates in a breathtaking home on the coast, resolved down to the finest detail.

The wine cellar is anchored by dark wood and CDK Verde Alpi stone and features the Tom Dixon Fat bar stools.

A grand open-tread staircase set in striking white and green stone embraces a softened curvature, reflecting the natural forms and colours of the ocean.

Mim Design have conceived the bedrooms as “quiet retreats”, offering moments of contemplation and sensation.

The home’s signature foamy white marble creates an immersive spa-like experience in the bathroom.

Horizon Flinders rests proudly atop the peninsula’s rugged cliffs, with expansive views stretching from the shore to the horizon.
