Interior designers Studio Griffiths take on the balanced transformation of a 1930s Californian bungalow in Melbourne’s Ivanhoe.
Studio Griffiths have taken their signature monochrome hand to a home in a leafy north-eastern suburb of Melbourne. With the brief to design a relaxed family home, their Ivanhoe Residence sees a Californian bungalow revised into an elegant and personalised home to grow up in, remaining respectful to the home’s heritage.
With its ornate architectural features still intact, Studio Griffiths director Gillianne Griffiths set out to stay true to the home’s Californian bungalow style. “We embraced many of the 1930’s elements, such as the leadlight windows, ornate ceilings and glass door panels, while still injecting a contemporary renovation to suit a family of five,” she says. Upon entering the front hallway, ceiling roses and glass doors are met with a contemporary statement – the eclectic Tom Dixon S Chair – setting the tone for the old-meets-new balance throughout the home.
The clients’ existing dining table and dining room storage were stained in an inky-black colour, layered with new pieces including the Under The Bell Pendant and Visu Chairs, both by Muuto. In the living room, a fireplace clad in New Savior limestone by CDK Stone is a contemporary twist on the traditional marble fireplace, while a pink velvet armchair adds a refined accent of colour. An iconic green velvet Featherston Scape Armchair asserts itself as a design feature in the study, complemented by a desk custom-designed by the studio.

Where a sophisticated material palette intersects with original 1930s bungalow charm, the Ivanhoe Residence by Studio Griffiths is a warm and inviting family home brimming with texture and personality.

The bedrooms and bathrooms display the same sleek spectrum of black and grey as the rest of the home, emphasising Studio Griffiths’ penchant for monochrome layering.
