We speak with Kitchens by Paul founder and director Paul Badran on how their latest project proves sophistication isn’t determined by scale.

Swedish kitchen designer Paul Badran is a stickler for bespoke design. As the founder and director of Kitchens by Paul, Paul’s portfolio focuses on the finer details through high-quality finishes, natural materials and integrated technology and hardware.

Kitchens by Paul are often working within heritage homes, which recently saw them complete a project in Sweden’s Stockholm. Paul and his team called on an old-world pairing of Carrara marble and rich smoked oak to meet a brief that sought to balance classic and modern design in a small space. We went behind the design of this kitchen to learn more about its Italian influence and how a stately aesthetic and innovative features combine to maximise space.

Kitchens by Paul took a darker approach in the kitchen with the melamine and smoked oak cabinetry, layered with an Italian Carrara marble benchtop and splashback that extends to the ceiling.

The owners asked for a kitchen with contrast for their historic apartment that followed a “simple yet timeless design”. With space at a premium, Kitchens by Paul conceived an L-shape kitchen formed around a central island and breakfast bar with stools neatly tucked beneath – reflecting the kitchen’s streamlined focus. This meant the kitchen could still be a central gathering point in the home and meet high traffic demands through consideration for flow of movement. In addition, the floor-to-ceiling wall cabinetry takes advantage of the ceiling height – without impinging on the overall space.

The kitchen sees a collaboration between Kitchens by Paul and Italian kitchen manufacturers, Arrital. Kitchens by Paul used a configuration of Arrital’s AkB_08 kitchen, by designer Franco Driusso and chef Andrea Berton – purpose-built for high performance and practicality.

Given the access to natural light in the space, Kitchens by Paul were able to take a darker approach to the kitchen cabinetry. This saw melamine and smoked oak cabinetry paired with an Italian Carrara marble benchtop and statement splashback that extends to the ceiling. In keeping with the glamorous theme, jewel-like brass accents are introduced through the cylindrical range hood and kitchen mixer.

“Appliances are as important as the kitchen itself; they have to meet a specific criteria as well as being aesthetically appealing.”

As a designer, Paul sees the appliances “as important as the kitchen itself; they have to meet specific criteria as well as being aesthetically appealing.” In this project, Paul specified the Bosch series 8 AccentLine built-in oven and Bosch series 8 FlexInduction cooktop.“The black Bosch oven integrates seamlessly with the smoked oak cabinets – just as the elegant induction cooktop acts as an extension of the Carrara marble benchtop,” Paul says.

The clients briefed Paul on appliances that needed to be “fast heating and easy cleaning”. The self-cleaning, carbon-black Bosch series 8 AccentLine built-in oven seeks to meet both requests with a turn of its stainless steel ring, featuring functional cooking programs and an extensive menu of food, to assist with efficiently putting a meal on the table. In addition, the FlexInduction cooktop ensures that meals are cooked quickly – through the SpeedBoost feature – and that different cookware is catered to and can be placed where you need it. Together, the Bosch series 8 oven and cooktop meet the clients’ needs while integrating seamlessly within the compact kitchen.

Kitchens by Paul present a custom take on contemporary elegance in this Stockholm kitchen, tailored to the client’s lifestyle and, at the same time, making the most of a confined space. As Paul aptly reflects, “Through this project, we learned that small kitchens do not have to be boring. With the right mix of material and colours, you can always create an amazing space.”
