Established by interior designer and CJH Studio founder Cassie James-Herrick, Australian hardware brand Linear Standard opens the doors to their first trade showroom on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria.

CJH Studio director Cassie James-Herrick founded Linear Standard with her husband Shaun Herrick, on the desire for more choice in the architectural and interior hardware space. What was first born from a handful of custom hardware designs in CJH Studio’s residential projects quickly amounted to a ready-to-shop collection in 2019. The pair have just opened the doors to their appointment-only showroom – naturally designed by CJH Studio – in Victoria’s Mornington.

Before Cassie’s intervention, the building was a classic industrial warehouse – a ‘concrete shell’ as she describes it. “It was very run down, factory-like and unappealing,” she laughs. The showroom – adjacent to the CJH Studio office – was formerly Linear Standard’s supply and logistic centre. After outgrowing their previous space and acquiring a new warehouse, Cassie was left with the perfect space to create a residential-like showroom.

Cassie says working with the bones of the warehouse was a challenge, with its six-metre-high ceilings and open-plan layout. “It presented a few difficulties because we’re essentially showcasing small products and details in a massive space,” the designer says. Cassie subtly laid the warehouse out like a home, creating a mock kitchen, dining space, bathroom, living room and study. “We weren’t trying to hide what the building is [a warehouse]. There are still cues and elements of its past,” Cassie says. “We’ve intentionally left the raw concrete walls and raw ceiling but focused on inserting warm, tactile and homely finishes wherever we can”.

“We weren’t trying to hide what the building really is [a warehouse]. There are still cues and elements of its past,” Cassie says.

The display kitchen runs parallel to the wall and is cast entirely from micro cement by local artisan m.o.d.a.e. This joinery is the podium for Linear Standard’s range of hidden and recessed pulls, encouraging clients to open the drawers and experience the products. “It wouldn’t make sense to have these elements on show, but when they’re seen in situ, people can connect the dots,” Cassie explains.

A custom dining table and stools by the team at Grange Joinery form the ‘dining’ space but also provide a generous workspace for consultations, where designers can bring in their samples and experiment with Linear Standard products.

Linear Standard’s variety of materials inspired the showroom palette. “Our collection ranges from timbers to metals to brasses – the layered interior design in the showroom was our way of subtly meshing the two together.” Statement lighting pieces from &Tradition, Twentytwentyone and Lumina Italia are the finishing touches, imbuing the overall showroom with a cosy, homely atmosphere.

Experience the Linear Standard trade showroom located at 2/8 Fuji Crescent, Mornington VIC 3931, open Tuesday – Thursday.
