Photographer Nikole Ramsay and stylist Emma O’Meara shot Barwon Heads-based abstract artist Megan Weston in her studio for Est Magazine as part of our Atelier series. We asked Megan to share with us about what makes her tick.
How would you describe your art?
Atmospheric abstract landscapes, large in scale but intense, with a dramatic, deep color palette. Bold but quietly content.
In 3 words describe your personal style?
Smart casual, chic, modern.
What are you currently working on?
I’m finishing off some rather large commissions for this year and preparing a release of new works before Christmas. Some are really pushing the boundaries but some are becoming quietly relaxed, so I’m really looking forward to a break over January.
Where do you live and work right now?
I currently reside in Barwon Heads, on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula. I designed our house and built it with husband Dan, my children Sunny, aged seven, Iluka, three and a half and Johnny, our 8 month old German Shepherd pup. I converted a space at the house for my studio, which makes it easier with Iluka and her sleep times and the all important school run. I do think now though that it would be nice to have more space to spread my wings.
What design purchase have you made lately?
I’ve been buying a lot of artwork of late. I’m a tad excited about a work by David Bromley that I look forward to hanging and I’m obsessed with Leila Jeffreys’ birds. I’ve also just bought a small print by Geoffrey Carran and I’m looking forward to commissioning him for a set of his cockatoos over the coming months. I’ve just bought a taxidermy black cockatoo from Fenton & Fenton; there’s something so striking about the black feathers and the way the light hits them that I find so beautiful to look at. I think I currently have a bird obsession.
What do you covet?
At the moment, space! I’m also obsessed with Nic Fiddian Green’s bronze horse sculptures, they are mind blowing. Amazing!
What are you reading?
The Curious Economics of Contemporary Art by Don Thompson, which I’m really enjoying and I’ve just finished The 9th Girl by Tami Hoag. I like a good murder mystery.
What are you listening to?
Lana Del Rey’s ‘Born to Die’ is often turned up in the studio.
What are you watching?
I don’t really watch a lot of TV but I must say I’m rather happy that Chris Lilley’s Ja’mie is on and don’t laugh, but I also love The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills – sometimes a bit of reality drama is good.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Anything you can’t buy! Health, happiness and family and also shoes, I love shoes.
Where do you go to for inspiration?
I fly with a friend of mine who’s a pilot, it’s amazing to see how quickly the landscape changes. It’s inspiring and thrilling at the same time. And anywhere that takes you back to nature, just a short trip down the Great Ocean Road is always refreshing.
