Melburnian Apartment by Edition Office sees the sculptural reincarnation of an apartment within an existing building overlooking the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Situated in Melbourne’s Southbank with views of the Arts Precinct and Royal Botanic Gardens, this inner-city Melbourne home cultivates warmth through a subdued colour palette, partitioned spaces and sweeping curves. The brief was inherently simple; to design a refined, calming sanctuary that restores a sense of freedom. With this in mind, Edition Office set out to amplify the client’s eccentricities through an emphasis on form and function and raw, authentic materials.
The kitchen occupies a narrow walkway in the centre of the home, featuring integrated appliances storage concealed behind timber cabinetry.
Flipping the traditional home layout on its head, the Melburnian Apartment is set out in an L-shaped floorplan without doors. Privacy is maintained through cleverly placed curved walls where the sight-line is naturally restricted. “In this way, the clients move from sleeping to morning coffee, to working in the home office and to washing and cooking in a continually evolving and smooth loop,” studio director Kim Bridgland explains.
The kitchen occupies a narrow walkway in the centre of the home, featuring integrated appliances and storage concealed behind timber cabinetry, appearing as part of the walls. This walkway leads you into the open living and dining room, imbued with a restrained colour and material palette. Terracotta tones found in the leather Molinari Rondo Chairs create a streak of colour, offset by the soft grey Bollo Armchairs and a neutral rug. A sense of calm is instilled through the floor-length grey sheers that wrap around the home’s perimeter and soften the urban view.

A quiet reading nook occupies one of the homes many curves, featuring the Apparatus Circuit 1 Sconce.
‘Continuous function’ curves throughout the home elevate the quality of light and shadow and maintain a sense of cohesion in each space; allowing for effortless movement from one space to another. Behind the living room, a curved wall plays home to a quiet reading nook clad in curved grey granite stone tiles, where a bench seat upholstered in terracotta leather subtly references the living room.
Moving into the master bedroom, a consistent grey colour palette evokes a feeling of comfort and enclosure, wrapped in the same raw linen sheers. The Flag Halyard Chair by Hans J. Wegner injects a Danish design sensibility and textural contrast into the minimal apartment.
As a result of Edition Office’s steadfast approach, the Melburnian Apartment seeks to explore a new way of inner-city apartment living through a contoured design narrative.
