Frederic Kielemoes introduces refined minimalism to a penthouse in the Belgian coastal town of Knokke-Heist.
Belgian interior architect Frederic Kielemoes has taken an unconventional approach to the typical Belgian beach home in the Midan Penthouse, cultivating warmth with little reference to the sand or the sea. Introducing robust materials that will develop a natural patina over time, the Midan Penthouse redefines coastal living in a pared-down and streamlined setting.

Frederic Kielemoes says his initial concept for the home revolved around hot rolled steel, akin to the fishing boats at the water. “I wanted to start off with a rough material as if it was cut out of the hull of a ship,” Frederic says. Robust elements like Muzillac Veine Travertine, sandblasted larch timber and Mystic Brown stone forms the base of the interior palette, softened by grey sheers, linen furniture and pastellone-style walls and ceilings.
Functionality is at the core of the kitchen design. Catering to the small space, woven metal cabinet doors promote openness while a sheer curtain conceals the walk-in pantry. “Just like my Italian grandmother’s storeroom, the pantry has a curtain rather than doors,” Frederic says. “I advocate this detail to all of my clients. Cooking becomes an act; you open the curtain and all the necessary tools and ingredients are at hand.”
