Home to a young family of five, this Edwardian home sits comfortably in the beachside suburb of Middle Park, Melbourne. A bustling family life called for a new home solution that allowed the family to live both casually and organised all at the same time. With the clients hailing from Finland and Australia respectively, the team at Sisalla Interior Design had the opportunity to transform their home to capture the spirit of both countries, extending and refreshing the interiors and saying goodbye to those iconic brown tones from the 60’s and hello to a fresh and vibrant palette.

The striking Edwardian facade greets visitors from the outset. From the ornate detailing of the stained glass windows to the elaborate door frame and beams, it is clear to see that attention to detail did not slip the Sisalla team’s mind at all. When navigating through the different rooms in the home, it almost feels like each room has a slightly different approach yet somehow work cohesively together. The grounding factor within each space is the sense of personality and uniqueness that each room entails, a talent previously shown by the firm in this Mt Martha home.

Given the importance placed by the clients to have their heritage and countries of origin incorporated into the design, the colour blue is featured quite a lot throughout the interior. As one of the main colours on the Finnish flag, it works not only to create a striking palette but also adds the personal touch the clients desired. The layering of different tones and materials, such as the polished concrete floors, bold wall colours and accents of light timber, ensures the interior never lacks warmth or character, while the recent extension is softened with a backdrop of pastel colours and black furniture to bring about a more mature vibe. This juxtaposition of both a playful yet sophisticated vibe provides the perfect balance for both the adults and children of the home.
Once drab and dated, this home has been completely transformed to both better utilise the space within and create a playful and inviting interior that this urban family so desperately needed. It’s a winning combination when the worlds of functionality and aesthetically pleasing design collide.
