Canadian design studio Sophie Burke Design brings a modern farmhouse aesthetic to this young family home in one of Vancouver’s most sought-after streets.
Inspired by European countryside living, Modern Farmhouse by Sophie Burke Design combines elements of contemporary and farmhouse architecture through an organic colour palette, tactile natural materials and thoughtful spatial proportions. Approaching the new build designed by Robert Blaney with a sense of quiet elegance, the team at Sophie Burke Design have made way for a welcoming family home that epitomises sophisticated Canadian living.
Sophie Burke Design founder and director Sophie Burke says that she worked to create a sense of timelessness. “We wanted the home of this young family to feel rugged, approachable and durable – not precious,” she explains.
Behind the black steel-frame front door, a full-height foyer references the farmhouse style and immediately sets the warm interior mood for the home. The gentle palette of oak, navy blue and black remains consistent throughout the home, linking each space to one another.
The generous kitchen is reminiscent of the large working kitchens in European farmhouse architecture. Instead of overhead cabinetry, Sophie Burke Design opted for floating shelves, opening up the kitchen and providing ample storage space. V-groove joinery, Wolf appliances and the steel-clad rangehood further emphasise the classic atmosphere of the home. A compact dining nook by the window provides the perfect spot for after school snacks with integrated storage underneath the window seat.

The formal dining room is a dedicated entertaining zone, complete with wine fridge integrated within the oak joinery. Upstairs, the bedrooms and bathrooms are positioned on two sides of a catwalk which bridge the living room and foyer. The same soothing palette downstairs is recreated upstairs, featuring timber wall panelling, grey stone and white walls.
Every detail in Sophie Burke Design’s Modern Farmhouse has been considered for its beauty and relevance. The result is a coherent, functional and inviting home to grow up in.
