A collaborative coalition between client and CM Studio, this picturesque Sydney home offers a modern and sophisticated approach to seaside life.
Anyone who has frequented Sydney’s Palm Beach will know there’s no shortage of incredible homes to envy. But this recent home, a refresh of an existing home overlooking the ocean by est design favourite CM Studio really caught our eye.
Transformed by a collaborative coalition including CM Studio, Les Interieurs, builder BAU Group and one talented client, this Palm Beach home references its heritage material palette with a confident, contemporary interpretation.
Together with their client (who was hands-on and had a lot of experience with renovating homes in the region), CM Studio, Les Interieuers and BAU Group introduced a palette of Shou-Sugi-Ban charred timber cladding, sandstone and soft marble for the home. Working to both gently modernise the home while reflecting its coastal context, the new materiality is relaxed yet stylish. These hardworking materials are also better equipped to deal with the harsh wind, sun, salt and sand that are prevalent in the area – ensuring the home’s aesthetic will age gracefully.
Always working with the philosophy of ‘beauty in simplicity’, here CM Studio have further used materiality to add definition in the different interior spaces of the home, balanced with a pared-back layout and monochrome hues. The coastal palette continues with white hand-painted shiplap cladding, two different types of Calacutta Statuario marble and refreshed existing timber floorboards.
By decluttering and emphasising light and space, CM Studio set the stage for the interior character to be further introduced through the interior styling by local design doyenne Pamela Makin of Les Interieurs. Makin’s talent for natural and textural pieces fits beautifully against the stripped-back spaces, adding to the home’s unique personality without overwhelming its design foundations.
Brought together and curated by the client’s clear vision and ideas, CM Studio and the rest of the collaborative coalition have woven the home’s history and future together in a beautifully striking way.
