A native to Melbourne, international photographer Derek Swalwell travels the world capturing architecture, interiors, landscape and lifestyle as well as expanding on his own personal portfolio of creative work. Shooting since 1999, Derek’s distinctive style includes his trademark use of natural light, visual articulation and restraint. Having documented some of est’s favourite homes from around the world, which most recently includes ‘Saintly Invention’ by B.E Architecture in our current Issue #34, Derek’s personal collections are also firmly on our radar.
For this exhibition, Derek travelled to Plano, Illinois, and Colombus, Indiana to document two of the worlds most iconic mid-century houses, Farnsworth House by esteemed creative Mies van der Rohe and Miller House by design pioneer Eero Saarinen. His resulting photographic works, which are realised in an awe-inspiring large format, truly capture each house under the unique conditions that Derek experienced. Typical of Derek’s work, the architectural mastery of each home is revealed, alongside a rich narrative and sense of history that are layered throughout each. An exhibition not to be missed by any design aficionado.
Derek Swalwell‘s exhibition Farnsworth + Miller opens its doors to the public on 25th October until 7th November 2019 at Fini Frames, 51-57 Cubitt Street, Cremorne, Melbourne.
