Point Grey Road by the Airey Group and SBD

Canadian interior studio Sophie Burke Design partner with Airey Group to shape an oceanfront site into a family’s ‘dream home’.

We were first introduced to interior studio Sophie Burke Design (SBD) through their light and bright cabin on Whistler’s ski slopes. This snow home called on a distinctly Nordic style; a common thread in all of Sophie Burke Design’s work.

Situated on Vancouver’s prestigious coastline is Point Grey Road, the studio’s latest project, designed in collaboration with architecture firm Airey Group. The home was designed for a creative and energetic couple and their kids, across the road from the beach with views of Vancouver mountains beyond. Asked to create the family’s dream home, SBD and Airey Group have delivered, through a well-crafted, spacious and relaxed interior.

Together SBD and Airey Group optimised all spaces to take in the Vancouver mountains and waterfront vistas. The private areas were placed on the ground floor, while the shared spaces on the top floor serve indoor/outdoor entertaining, with the option to welcome a sea breeze.

The interior’s consistent flow relies on juxtaposition. SBD based the home around a contrasting muted palette where white walls and millwork were punctuated by black-stained wooden windows and doors, lined with ebony-stained oak. Aside from these elements, all other trim work and detail were deliberately eliminated. Classic black lighting fixtures, bathroom and kitchen fittings on white quartzite counters also add to the dramatic monochrome accents.

SBD selected natural materials with an organic finish to heighten the home’s connection to the outdoors. This approach was revealed through the highly-textured sisal rugs, wire-brushed white oak flooring, leather cabinet pulls, linen drapery and painted shiplap cladding.

Anchoring each space is a strong emphasis on renowned design objects. In the master bedroom lies the ever-refined Gervasoni Ghost Bed 80E and the Around Coffee Table by Muuto. In the open plan living area, the Hiroshima chair by Maruni sits up at the dining table, with the Nerd Stool by Muuto at the kitchen bench. Other design highlights include the Fly Chair from &Tradition

Principally, the home is a well-tailored hub for a busy family and provides a  space where they can enjoy the close proximity to their picturesque surrounds, be it inside or out.
