Kieu Tan started this Studio Kieu Resilience sculpture in the days following the tragic death of George Floyd. This sculpture came into existence while helicopters flew overhead in Oakland, amidst world wide BLM protests and reports of police brutality against peaceful demonstrators. This work merely started as two abstract shapes she liked and wanted to incorporate together, but she thinks that she transferred all the internal anguish and external environmental chaos to the work. When Kieu finished it, it gave me the impression of strength in the face of adversity, the ability to recover from a disturbance after incurring losses; the title Resilience was ringing in her ears.
