As the founder of NYC based architecture firm Tamarkin Co, Cary Tamarkin and his team create classically modern homes for a design discerning client in sophisticated, distinctive buildings high above the streets of the city. Or, in this case, above the sand dunes of Shelter Island on Long Island, New York.
Inspired by a Japanese design aesthetic, this seemingly simple wooden box looking out over the water plays holiday home to Tamarkin’s own family of four during the summer. Constructed entirely of aged cypress timber with steel windows and polished concrete floors, a covered outdoor breezeway connects the homes two separate zones; the sleeping area, and the living area. The movement from indoors to out adds to the feeling of laid back, beachy living while the interiors have been kept cleverly restrained and decidedly relaxed thanks to Interior Designer Suzanne Shaker.
We also love the decidedly low maintenance, natural look garden that requires absolutely no weekend mowing whatsoever. This home is a perfect example of how to blend into the landscape and how to truly relax while on holiday.
