Wolveridge Architects blur the lines between inside and out in this family beach house on the Mornington Peninsula, undertaking an ‘exercise in 3D Tetris’.

Melbourne and Port Douglas-based firm Wolveridge Architects are known for their focus on integrating architecture with its environment. Tucked away in a cul de sac just metres from the beach in Sorrento, Victoria, the latest residential project from Wolveridge Architects sees a two-storey monolithic volume unfold into a series of spaces, working in tandem with the natural contours of the site.

Steering away from the traditional ‘token front fence’, Sorrento Light House is surrounded by the garden, acting as a natural buffer between the building and the street. Clean lines, split-face concrete blocks and linear timber cladding make up the facade – a nod to materials used in the Mid-Century era. This contemporary design narrative follows inside, showcasing polished concrete floors, a neutral, coastal-inspired palette and streamlined skirting boards and architraves.

The U-shaped, north-facing living area houses the kitchen, dining and living space, completely opening up to reveal an outdoor sitting space with a fireplace and an undercover outdoor dining zone equipped with a functional kitchen and pizza oven.

A similar interplay of soft and harmonious tones repeats itself in the private quarters upstairs, maintaining a consistent design ethos throughout the home.

The indoor kitchen flexibly caters to children and adults, with a large breakfast bar and concealed bar station and wine fridge. Integrated glossy black appliances cut through the elegant marble kitchen, complementing nearby black touches like the Volker Haug pendant and Miyazaki DC09 Dining Chairs. By keeping to a pared-back, monochrome colour palette throughout, green and blue from the surrounding garden and pool inject colour into the home.

Balancing light with dark, Sorento Light House by Wolveridge Architects is a sensitive and unpretentious beach house with a sincere connection to its surroundings.
