So we feel pretty lucky here at Est HQ to count amongst our friends some pretty incredible creatives. The beauty and the brains behind our latest handbag obsession (you may have noticed the limited edition of the blue Escape Bag popping up on the arm of our Est Editor, Sian MacPherson @estmagazine on Instagram?) are best friends from Freshwater on Sydney’s northern beaches, Brigitte MacGowan and Desley Maidment who together created the brand State of Escape.
We got to know the talented duo through another Est friend and contributor at large, Sarah Furphy, who insisted we would love the girls as much as she. And of course we did. Brigitte and Desley became firm friends as soon as they met after moving into the same street at Freshwater beach, with children the same age you can’t always guarantee that you’re going to always have interests in common but both Brig and Des discovered that they had similar burning creative desires to pursue that could ignore.
Driven by both a love of neoprene, and a good carryall bag for every day busy lives, the girls got to designing a bag that is as beautiful in its utility as it is in its form. Enter the Escape Bag.
Many prototypes later, all originally painstakingly handmade by Brigitte, the Escape Bag is the end result that sees the marriage of neoprene with sailing rope to create an incredibly durable bag (it can be hand washed) that has its own unique, distinct style.
“It all started with the neoprene fabric – it’s strong, soft and very light-weight. We wanted to find a way to showcase these inherent qualities” says Desley. With a added pouch for your valuables, or for your keys and lippy, the girls have now, some three years on, perfected upon the original creation. Designed and made in Australia – we think this is the perfect bag whether you’re a mum on the run, a stylist on set or an editor in the office – or all three!
And if your after a limited edition Blue version see them for sale at Bassike now. But be quick is our inside tip.
