Est Magazine Editor-in-chief Sian MacPherson is packing up the family and heading north to warmer waters for the summer. Sian shares a few tips on where to visit, eat and stay.
Portsea Backbeach is too cold for us, so we’re off to Avoca on the New South Wales Central Coast – just North of Sydney. Share housing with friends and kids running wild between surf and pool is all kinds of fun. With the boys now grown up and with best friends to hang out with means no more ‘watch me, watch me’! = time for total relaxation and a little bit of reflection… maybe?
Avoca Beach suits the boys for the surf and me for the location. Far enough removed – without being totally removed. With a café serving breakfast, lunch and dinner right on the sand, this place is the perfect ingredient to my ideal holiday – no cooking!
With Killcare just up the road along a cliff top coastline to rival Portofino (ok – if you squint just a little) and the fabulous Bells of Killcare guesthouse and restaurant by Stefano Manfredi – you will swear you have been transported somewhere along the Med.
Further along the Bouddi Peninsula is Pretty Beach and Hardy’s Bay – the perfect place for lolling around watching boats glide across the harbour and the sun twinkling on the water while listening to one of my favourite sounds – the Whip Bird call.
I recommend you put away your credit card – no need to hit the shops here – its all about sun, surf and fish and chips in this little pocket.
EAT Burger Girls Cafe at Avoca Beach – for the true Australian classic fare. The Kiosk at Avoca Beach Surf Club – for the best hot chips, chicken salad wraps and hands down the best coffee in town.
STAY Bells at Killcare – for something a little more elegant – slip out of your bathers and into some crushed linen for dining.
