The Sunseeker Byron Bay

The Sunseeker is a boutique accommodation experience in the heart of Byron Bay. Its aesthetic is barefoot holiday meets retro LA – with colour, texture, art and sunny good vibes at its core. The vibe is relaxed and friendly, and its location – just out of the hustle of town – is perfect; still close enough to the action but a little tropical oasis away from it all.

Together with a talented and inspiring team of local creatives, owners Dave and Jess Frid were able to bring their dream to life. They wanted to create an authentic holiday experience that reflected some of the best holidays they have had themselves while celebrating creative makers, artists and craftspeople in and around Byron Bay. They engaged Tory Bauer as a creative consultant (and connector, motivator, way-finder), Julia Ashwood of The Vista as interiors consultant, Lila Theodoros of Muse Muse for all things fun, playful and confident design, and Locky and his team at Land Company for the landscaping. They also sing the praises of Bec the GM who makes the Sunseeker such an extra special place.

Made up of 12 hotel-style rooms and six family-friendly bungalows, the accommodation here is cosy and charming. The Standard rooms are perfect for a pair or soloist, featuring a queen bed and an assortment of bespoke furniture pieces.

The Sunseeker rooms are a bit bigger and have a closable bedroom and an enormous ochre corduroy built-in day bed which can be turned into a bed for a young child if needed. The Family Room is a clever room for a small family or a couple of friends, with two closable bedrooms and an assortment of bespoke furniture pieces. The master bedroom has a queen bed, and the second bedroom has a queen bed with a single bunk up top. All of these rooms are available on both the top and bottom floors –so you can take your pick. Leif Bath Products, Mayde Tea, Coffee Supreme, and The Sunseeker X Jilly Wine are just some of the local products found in the rooms.

The California-style beach bungalows, lined up like a little village, are small, clever and creative. Simple and charming, they come with two small bedrooms, a kitchen, bathroom, their own deck, Webber BBQ, private garden and outdoor, covered bath.

The Sunseeker is super family-friendly. Kids are not just welcome here, they are doted on. All rooms and bungalows skirt around a lush poolside tropical dreamscape, with the kidney-shaped pool sitting under large jungle palms and tropical tiki bar just around the corner. Kids are catered for by way of a great little nature-inspired playground, a trampoline, basketball ring, and complimentary scooters and skateboards.

The Sunseeker team have just installed educational planter boxes and a Subpod compost system to process green waste into garden fertiliser, and a special beehive from Flow where kids can tap honey straight from the hive without opening it or disturbing the bees. Surfboards and bikes (both pushbikes and electric bikes) will also soon be available to hire.

A firm but simple respect for nature is what lies at the heart of everything they do at The Sunseeker. Some of the conscious initiatives introduced include the recycled concrete from landfill that is used in the custom terrazzo benchtops; the 80’s slate tile that was pulled up from the rooms and turned into the crazy jagged paved entrance you see on arrival; the lobby fireplace was built from bricks salvaged from walls in the main building, the 82 solar panels and a 27kwh system that is used to power the hotel; the 3 x 15,000-litre water tanks which service the pool and garden, and each of the bungalows has its own 3,000-litre water tank. Sustainable and recycled timbers are used throughout the property, and hemp was used to insulate the bungalows (via local, sustainable building experts, Balanced Earth). And lastly, there are solar connected electric vehicle charging points available for guests.

Dave and Jess Frid, together with their dynamo team of creatives, have created something very special in The Sunseeker. Well-considered yet understated, relaxed and fun, this family-friendly accommodation experience is the perfect place to enjoy Byron Bay at its finest.
