Idyllically located in country Victoria, Thornton Residence sees Doherty Design collaborate with Detail 9 Architects to create an envious weekender escape that embraces its unique landscape and proposes a peaceful disconnect from the city.

Envisioned as a low maintenance occasional abode, Thornton Residence by Doherty Design Studio brings together a certain country charm to its modern and refined weekender escape. The home is comprised of three distinct pavilions that are each connected to one another with glass corridors. Each pavilion functions differently to create a sense of distinction between the living spaces and more private sleeping zones. At just over 200sqm of internal floor area, the floorplan works in connection to its bushland setting.

The kitchen features the Brodware City Stik Kitchen Mixer in a Statue Bronze PVD and integrated Fisher and Paykel appliances, both from E&S Trading.

The Kitchen space is tiled in Moroccan Tiles from Tiento Tiles in both square and rectangle format, and the walls are clad in EasyVJ 100 boards by Easy Craft, and painted in Dulux‘s Hog Bristle.

The large open living, dining and kitchen area brings its occupants together around the uniquely geometric hearth. Clad in hand-made ceramic tiles, the true centrepiece of the home is it’s fireplace, where the concrete bench creates a platform for storage, display and a place of reflection. Large sliding doors and the considered placement of glazed openings throughout encourages vistas toward the quintessentially Australian backdrop.

The surrounding outdoor timber deck areas situated around the pavilions encourage a natural flow between the inside and out. Externally, the materiality speaks to a country aesthetic and features brickwork and metal sheeting detail. Internally, the barn design is expressed via the lofty, pitched roof and the restraint application of a muted palette and handmade tiles, which adds a touch of the handmade.

The integration of crazy paving to the underside of the integrated bench and fireplace adds a quirkiness that connects a person and their personality to their home. Together with the polished plaster walls, concrete, black steel, painted timber panelling, ceramic tiles and blackbutt timber flooring, there is a combined robustness created. The insertion of dotted pockets of blue throughout add an additional layer of calm.

Comfortable and congenial, Thornton Residence combines a contemporary and curated approach to the rural setting, adding refinement and attention to detailing and amenity not often afforded in such a unique setting. Born from a place of simplicity and restraint, Doherty Design, together with Detail 9 Architects have created a balance that embodies an effortless and earnest place of escape.
