A Renaissance Revival townhouse in the heart of New York conceals calming, spacious interiors redesigned by Chango & Co.
Brooklyn-based design studio Chango & Co. have created a multi-dimensional home, styled by interior designer Katja Greeff, that radiates equal parts warm and cool. The Upper West Townhouse carries a sense of calm contrary to its Manhattan surroundings, walking the line between classic minimalism and modern living to accommodate a young family.

The Home
A robust red brick exterior maintains the townhouse’s ties to New York City’s rich history, while Chango & Co. decided to restore the townhouse’s iconic stoop, which was removed in the 1970s. Inside, three levels vary in size to suit their roles, from private, to shared, to recreational.
Designed for a young family, each space is shaped by the need to grow, relax and entertain within. Each floor is connected by a slim stairwell that filters natural light from the skylight on the top level. It’s fluidity is enhanced with curving brown timber.
The comforting living area features textural pieces such as the Pouf Sectional Sof and Baume Console Table from Stahl + Band, alongside the Isla Coffee Table from Egg Collective.
From The Top
A sense of calm is enhanced by a creamy, textural palette that underpins each level. In the master bedroom, eyes are drawn to the custom-made bed, where a boucle headboard stretches into a cosy window bench seat. The primary bathroom makes use of its grand size, with a freestanding bath and two vanities.
Susana designed the kitchen space to blend with the surrounding furniture, informing the handmade Zellige tiles and profile cabinetry. Smooth Calacatta gold stone envelops two separate freestanding bench tops to maximise the cooking and entertaining space. The adjacent dining space features a steel frame window that opens onto an alfresco breakfast area. Below, a recreational space connects a casual lounge with the impressive outdoor patio.
An Illuminated Interior
To align with conventions of warmth and comfort, the Upper West Townhouse features a unique and extensive lighting collection. Modern and antique pieces emit a deliberately soothing light, as seen in the bathrooms, where each mirror is flanked by delicate sconces from the likes of Apparatus Studio, In Common With and Kelly Wearstler. At the same time, striking pendants anchor each space.
Chango & Co. utilise negative space and natural light to create a soothing environment with subtle surprises. The Upper West Townhouse is a tranquil home that appeals to family living, with consideration for how the occupants may evolve in years to come.
Playful tones carry into the nursery’s adjoining bathroom, with pink tiles and In Common With brass lighting.
The guest bedroom features an Isamu Noguchi Akari pendant lamp.
