Adam Kane Architects’ Walnut House is an anecdote of its surroundings – the idyllic countryside of Daylesford, Victoria.

Built around the established walnut tree on site, Walnut House represents the unbreakable bond between a home and its environment. By seeking a constant dialogue with nature, Melbourne-based firm Adam Kane Architects manages to instil a resounding sense of ease and tranquillity into the home. This imperturbable atmosphere can be felt from the outset – walking up the floating concrete stairs and passing through the oversized and frameless pivot door.

A country town in the foothills of Victoria’s Great Dividing Range, Daylesford provides the perfect setting for a rustic retreat. Remote and removed, the home offers an escape from the city. From form to tone to material selection, each design element contributes to this get-away experience.

The home’s material palette is emblematic of its place in nature. The walls and furniture are inlaid with wood the colour of the walnut tree, complemented by natural stone throughout. Together, the materials create a space that feels both intuitive and organic – the inside, synced with outside. Employing only two tones also maintains a sense of balance and order within the home, similar to that which exists in nature.

The custom linear light display softly illuminates the living room. Notable pieces in this space include the Gubi Wonder Sofa and Massproductions Crown Lounge Chair.

Taking a holistic approach to each project – seamlessly integrating architecture, interiors and landscape – is one of Adam Kane Architects’ guiding philosophies. In the Walnut House, the gabled roofs create symmetry, the concrete facade creates longevity, the open floor plan creates flow. Each of these qualities ensures that the home feels cohesive and finished.

The living room, kitchen and dining area have been deliberately planned to encourage occupants to gather and take in their surroundings. Full-height ceilings open up each of these spaces, while embedded linear lighting render them into subtle installations. Oversized windows act as ever-changing seasonal backdrops, letting in an abundance of colour and natural light.

Walnut House by Adam Kane Architects is a testament to nature guiding design, calling attention to nature’s role not just in architecture and design but in our everyday lives.
