Zealand Home

Located just 20 minutes drive from central Copenhagen, Zealand feels much further away from Denmark’s capital city thanks to the forests, orchards and beach that surround it. For Kaja Møller and her family, Zealand is the ideal environmental antidote to the bustle of the inner-city, made even better by its extensive gardens and outdoor spaces.

As the CEO of one of our favourite international design purveyors, Federica Furniture, we were expecting Kaja’s home to be filled with chic and covetable items. While there’s certainly many recognisable features to spot in her spaces, we also enjoy the down-to-earth style and relaxed aesthetic created in this family home.

Originally built in 1904, the building was substantially renovated from 2001-2016, preserving the original design and details like the iconic Dannebrog wooden-framed windows while modernising the spaces and restructuring the home’s floor plan. The open-plan kitchen area was formed from fusing together three small rooms, and small garden-facing windows were replaced with six sets of double doors to welcome in the greenery outside. The doors are Kaja Møller’s favourite feature; “it’s all about creating atmosphere close to the house and creating “hygge” corners” she says.

Other structural efforts were undertaken to create space for a larger bathroom and to introduce custom bedroom cabinetry, maximising “every single inch” of the home. Once the layout of the home was completed, new material details such as the Dinesen Douglas windowsills and floor planks and natural stone for the bathrooms were added for modern sophistication and practicality.

Describing her style as a mix of modern Italian/French and Danish design, Kaja has assembled an eclectic yet elegant collection of furnishings, artwork and design objects. Stalwarts of the Federica family such as the Spanish Chair by Børge Mogensen are paired with notable names of contemporary design such as Sebastian Herkner, Ilse Crawford and Jasper Morrison, while antiques such as the vintage Doctor’s chest in the living room give a further glimpse to the residents’ personality and design preferences. It’s no surprise this home oozes effortless charm and character (this is Denmark after all) but we love the way it does so with surprising restraint and a down-to-earth ethos.
